Minecraft's Pale Garden: All You Need to Know

Dylan6 min read

Home of the Creaking, the Pale Garden is a gray, desolate biome found within the Overworld. The Pale Garden was fully added to Minecraft as part of The Garden Awakens drop, releasing with Java Edition 1.21.4 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.50.

Filled with pale trees, strange flowers, eerie sounds, and one particularly unsettling mob, this biome is quite different from your average Minecraft forest.

In this guide, we'll go over how to find the Pale Garden, what makes it unique, what you can collect there, and how to survive your visit.

Minecraft The Pale Garden Announcement in Minecraft Live

The Pale Garden itself is a wasteland-esque forest filled with Pale Oak trees and Pale Moss. It can easily be identified by the soulless gray that paints the landscape, giving almost everything around you a washed-out and lifeless appearance.

The atmosphere is just as unusual as the landscape. Normal Minecraft music fades away when entering the Pale Garden, leaving much of the biome's eerie ambience to sounds produced by Pale Hanging Moss, Creaking Hearts, and Eyeblossoms.

Speaking of Eyeblossoms, these strange flowers are exclusive to the Pale Garden. During the day they remain closed, but once night falls, they open their glowing orange eyes.

The Pale Garden is a variation of the Dark Forest biome, replacing its familiar Dark Oak trees with the ghostly Pale Oaks that give the biome its name.

How to Find the Pale Garden

Finding a Pale Garden can take some exploration.

Because the Pale Garden is a variation of the Dark Forest, searching around large Dark Forest regions is a good place to start. Keep an eye out for the sudden appearance of gray Pale Oak trees and Pale Moss, which make the biome fairly easy to recognize once you're nearby.

The biome's desaturated colors are especially noticeable from a distance when compared against the green leaves of neighboring forests.

Mobs Within the Pale Garden

Color is not the only thing absent within the Pale Garden. Animal mobs do not naturally spawn within this biome, meaning you shouldn't expect to find cows, pigs, sheep, or other easy sources of food while exploring.

Come prepared with food and other supplies, as the Pale Garden itself won't provide many of the usual survival resources you'd expect from a forest.

Regular hostile mobs can still spawn within the Pale Garden, including Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers, Spiders, and others. The thick forest canopy also creates plenty of dark areas for trouble to hide in.

But the Pale Garden's most unique threat is the Creaking, an ambush mob that blends almost perfectly into the gray trees around it.

Creakings appear at night when activated by nearby Creaking Hearts hidden inside naturally generated Pale Oak trees.

The strange thing about a Creaking is that attacking it won't defeat it normally. Instead, hitting the Creaking causes particles to appear between it and the Creaking Heart controlling it.

Follow those particles, find the heart, and destroy it to get rid of the linked Creaking.

For more information about the Creaking, please check out our guide on it here.

When entering the Pale Garden at night, be prepared. Between Creakings and the regular hostile mobs lurking between the trees, things can become dangerous very quickly.

Day vs. Night in the Pale Garden

2026 08 02 21.48.31

The Pale Garden is creepy during the day, but nighttime is when the biome truly comes alive.

During the day, Creaking Hearts remain inactive and Eyeblossoms stay closed. While the dense forest can still make navigating difficult, this is generally the safer time to explore and gather materials.

Once night falls, things change.

Eyeblossoms begin opening, Creaking Hearts hidden within naturally generated Pale Oak trees can activate, and Creakings begin appearing around their linked hearts.

Creakings are tied to the day and night cycle rather than ordinary mob-spawning light levels, so simply covering the forest in torches won't stop an active Creaking Heart from becoming a problem.

If your main goal is gathering Pale Oak or Moss, daytime is the easier option. If you're looking for Creaking Hearts or Resin, however, you'll want to understand how the biome works at night.-

Unique Blocks and Resources

The Pale Garden contains several resources that cannot normally be found in ordinary forests.

  • Pale Oak: The biome’s defining tree. Player-grown Pale Oak trees do not naturally generate Creaking Hearts.

  • Eyeblossoms: Flowers that stay closed during the day and glow orange when open at night. They can be used for dyes, Suspicious Stew, and are poisonous to bees.

  • Creaking Hearts: Blocks found inside some Pale Oak trees that control nearby Creakings at night. They can be collected using Silk Touch.

  • Resin: Resin Clumps appear near a Creaking Heart when its Creaking is attacked. They can be crafted into blocks or smelted into bricks for building and armor trims.

Tips for Surviving the Pale Garden

The Pale Garden is a hostile place once night falls. It is not recommended to wander in unprepared, as danger can and likely will be lurking around every tree.

1. Bring Extra Food

Think you have enough food on you? Think again!

Food is your lifeline when exploring here, as there won't be any naturally spawning animals around to provide more once you enter the Pale Garden.

Well, except for Rotten Flesh from Zombies, if you just love the Hunger status effect. Hey, I don't judge.

Bringing plenty of steak, cooked porkchops, or other filling foods will make managing your hunger and health much easier.

2. Brew Potions

If you have the capability of doing so (or if you've just gotten lucky with loot), bring some potions with you for your journey, namely Night Vision and Regeneration or Instant Health.

The Pale Garden can be incredibly dark beneath its dense trees, especially once night falls. Night Vision makes spotting mobs and navigating between the Pale Oaks much easier, while healing potions can give you some extra breathing room if things go wrong.

3. Bring a Good Axe

A Creaking's greatest weakness is its linked Creaking Heart.

When you attack a Creaking, particles will point toward the heart controlling it. Locate the heart inside a Pale Oak tree and destroy it to get rid of the linked Creaking.

An axe is the fastest tool for breaking a Creaking Heart, so bringing a good one can make the process much quicker.

Better yet, bring an axe enchanted with Silk Touch if you want to collect the Creaking Heart itself for personal use later.

4. Watch Your Back

Creakings only move when a player isn't actively looking at them.

Keep your wits about you, stay alert, and regularly check behind you while moving through the Pale Garden.

If you encounter one, keeping it in your sights can stop it from advancing while you figure out where its Creaking Heart is located.

This also goes for Creepers.

Because you never know....
