How to Use Scaffolding in Minecraft

Scaffolding is a block in Minecraft with similar functionality to a ladder, along with a few extra features that can assist you with your construction endeavors. It is rather cheap to craft and comes in bundles of 6, making it a practical option whenever you need temporary aerial traversal.

How to Obtain Scaffolding

Scaffolding can be obtained either through looting chests within Trial Chambers or by crafting it with six bamboo and one string. Each batch creates six scaffolding blocks for you to use at your leisure!

Crafting is generally the most reliable way to obtain a large amount, particularly since both bamboo and string are renewable resources.

How to Place Scaffolding

After placing your first scaffolding block, you can use the place button on it again to quickly build a tower. In Java Edition, using the side of a scaffolding block places the new block at the top of the stack, allowing you to continue building upward while standing safely on the ground.

Scaffolding can also be extended horizontally to create temporary platforms. However, it can only extend up to six blocks away from a supported column. Attempting to place another block beyond that limit will cause the new scaffolding to fall, so longer platforms require additional support columns.

The exact placement method differs slightly between Java and Bedrock Edition. In Java Edition, using the top face of scaffolding extends it in the direction you are facing. Bedrock players instead place scaffolding outward more like an ordinary block.

How to Climb and Descend Scaffolding

Scaffolding is a block that you can normally walk through from the side, acting similarly to other non-solid blocks in that regard.

To climb a scaffolding tower, walk inside it and hold the Jump button. To descend, hold the Sneak button instead. On PC, the default controls are the Spacebar to climb and Shift to descend.

Once you reach the required height, you can move onto the top of the scaffolding and extend it toward the area where you are building. This makes scaffolding especially useful for reaching roofs, walls, ceilings, and other awkward areas without covering your structure in permanent ladders.

How to Remove Scaffolding

Scaffolding is extremely easy to clean up once you have finished building. Breaking the bottom block of a supported scaffolding tower causes the unsupported blocks above it to break and drop as items as well.

This allows you to dismantle an entire tower quickly instead of mining every individual block. Make sure that nobody is still standing on the scaffolding before removing its support!

Scaffolding Tips and Common Mistakes

Because Sneak is normally used to prevent players from walking off the edge of a block, it can be easy to press Shift instinctively while standing on scaffolding. However, Sneak causes you to descend through scaffolding instead, so do not rely on it to hold yourself at the edge of a platform.

Remember that horizontal scaffolding platforms require another support column after six blocks. Any scaffolding placed beyond the support limit will fall rather than remain attached.

You should also avoid removing the bottom support block while another player is using the tower. The entire unsupported section will collapse, potentially dropping them along with it.

Scaffolding can be broken without a particular tool. In Java Edition, it breaks instantly. In Bedrock Edition, it takes a small amount of time to break, although an axe can remove it faster.

Scaffolding vs. Ladders

Scaffolding and ladders can both provide vertical access, but they are suited to different situations.

Scaffolding is generally better for temporary construction. It can be stacked rapidly from the ground, extended outward to form platforms, and dismantled by removing its support. This makes it ideal when working on large walls, roofs, statues, or other builds where your required height and position will frequently change.

Ladders are usually more practical for permanent access. They attach to the sides of solid blocks, do not collapse together when one ladder is removed, and allow you to hold Sneak to remain in place. This makes them a better choice for permanent mineshaft entrances, towers, basements, and other completed structures.

Other Uses for Scaffolding

Outside of construction, scaffolding can provide a controlled way to descend mountainsides, caves, or other tall structures. This is considerably safer than attempting a last-minute water-bucket landing after a leap of faith—and the subsequent shattering of your legs.

Scaffolding can also be waterlogged, making it useful as temporary access around underwater construction projects.

It can technically be used as furnace fuel, but it is extremely inefficient. Each scaffolding block smelts only one-quarter of an item, meaning four blocks are required to complete a single smelting operation. Reusing it for future construction is usually the better option.
