How To Make Charcoal in Minecraft

Charcoal is an alternative fuel source to Coal in Minecraft, and is extremely simple to manufacture for the creation of torches and fuel for furnaces.

Step One: Find Some Trees

The first ingredient for Charcoal is simply any type of Log in the game. Go out and do some lumberjacking, and once you have a healthy amount, haul it all back to your base.

A totally normal tree location. Totally.

Step Two: Acquire a Furnace

Now you need a Furnace. You can steal one from a Village, haul one from a mineshaft, or craft one. They're really cheap, just eight cobblestone after all.

If you’re brand new to survival, crafting a Furnace is usually the fastest and most reliable option. Just mine some stone (or deepslate) with a pickaxe, then place eight cobblestone in a ring in the crafting grid, leaving the center empty. Once it’s down, you’ve unlocked one of the most important early-game tools for turning raw materials into useful items—including turning logs into Charcoal.

Step Three: Making the Charcoal

So we have our Logs and we have our Furnace. Now it's as simple as cooking the logs in the furnace with any available fuel source. In my example, I just used (not at all suspiciously gathered) Coal to do the dirty work.

To smelt logs into Charcoal, place your logs in the top slot of the Furnace and add any fuel to the bottom slot. Early on, common fuel choices include:

  • Planks, sticks, or wooden tools you don’t need

  • Coal (if you have it)

  • Charcoal itself, once you’ve made the first piece

  • Dried kelp blocks or blaze rods (later game)

A handy trick is to start with a small amount of fuel (even a few planks), smelt a couple logs into Charcoal, then use that Charcoal to smelt the rest. This helps you avoid burning through your building wood when you’re trying to stockpile fuel.

Upon completion, your logs will be turned into Charcoal:

Additional Notes

Charcoal is a carbon copy (no pun intended) of Coal in terms of statistics, and burn for the same duration (approximately smelting eight items per piece of Coal/Charcoal). Charcoal can also replace Coal in recipes for Torches, Soul Torches, Fire Charges, and Campfires. Note that Charcoal can not be crafted into blocks.

One of the biggest reasons players love Charcoal is consistency: trees are everywhere, and you can grow them yourself. If you’re setting up a long-term base, consider planting a small tree farm nearby so you always have a renewable fuel source. Spruce and jungle trees are especially nice for bulk logs, while oak is easy to replant quickly.

Coal
Found by mining and caving. Great early fuel, but supply depends on exploration and luck. Can be crafted into coal blocks for compact storage.

Charcoal
Made by smelting logs. Fully renewable and easy to mass-produce with a tree farm. Same burn time and most of the same crafting uses, but can’t be turned into blocks.

Why Charcoal Is Useful Early (and on Servers)

On multiplayer worlds, Charcoal can be even more valuable because it reduces the need to fight over nearby cave resources. Instead of everyone strip-mining the same area for Coal, you can fuel your furnaces and light your builds using wood you gathered (or grew) yourself. It’s also a great way to keep your base well-lit with torches while you’re still gearing up.

Pro tip: Keep a “starter furnace” running on wood just long enough to make a stack of Charcoal, then switch to Charcoal as your main fuel. It’s one of the easiest early-game upgrades.

While this guide only provides information for vanilla, it should be noted that some mod recipes may also allow the substitution of Coal with Charcoal, or outright require it. Be sure to check your recipes, as it may be more cost-effective to use Charcoal in some cases! It is much easier to make more Charcoal than it is to locate and mine more Coal!

If you’re playing with friends and want a smooth, lag-free world for building farms and running furnaces constantly, hosting your Minecraft server with Simple Game Hosting is a solid choice—especially when your group starts scaling up automated wood and Charcoal production.
