How to Make a Smooth Stone Slab in Minecraft

Dylan4 min read
Slab

Smooth Stone Slabs are one of many different blocks that can be used for decorative or general construction purposes. They are extremely easy to obtain, so we'll go step by step on the process here.

A Smooth Stone Slab is essentially a half-height version of Smooth Stone, which makes it perfect for clean modern floors, minimalist roofs, stairs without the “chunky” look, and compact detailing around windows and pathways. Because slabs reduce fall damage and can help you fine-tune elevation changes, they’re also a practical building block—not just a decorative one.

Step 1: Getting the Smooth Stone

First, we'll need to turn Cobblestone to Stone. Simple enough, just smelt Cobblestone in a furnace like so:

And then, we'll smelt the Stone again to make Smooth Stone

Once we've amassed a desireable collection, we will be able to move to step 2.

To make this faster, it helps to plan your fuel and furnace setup. Each smelt takes time, and you’re smelting twice (Cobblestone → Stone → Smooth Stone), so a small “smelting station” can save a lot of waiting.

  • Fuel choices: Coal is easy early-game, while lava buckets are great for longer smelting sessions.

  • Scale it up: Using multiple furnaces (or a blast furnace for other tasks) lets you process stacks in parallel.

  • Batch your work: Smelt several stacks of Cobblestone into Stone first, then convert that Stone into Smooth Stone.

Pro tip: If you’re building a large base, smelt Smooth Stone in bulk ahead of time so your building session doesn’t get interrupted by furnace downtime.

Step 2: Making the Slabs

Now, here we have two options, and it's mainly a matter of precision.

If you're not worried about being somewhat wasteful, you can simply slap 3 Smooth Stone in a line in order to create 6 Slabs:

But if you're concerned about waste product, you can mitigate this by using a Stonecutter. Stonecutters can be crafted using 3 Stone blocks across, with an Iron Ingot placed above in the center of the Stone as depicted here:

Next, place and use your Stonecutter. Place the Smooth Stone in a box, and you'll be able to cut individual pieces of stone into 2 slabs each, rather than using 3 for 6.

This gives you more control over how many slabs you'll produce in the end, making it somewhat more efficient than crafting in bulk. Stonecutters can also cut other types of stone blocks into similar objects, so investing in one now is a convenient endeavor, especially if you're planning on constructing with Stone in the future.

Crafting Table vs. Stonecutter: Which should you use?

Crafting Table
Fast and simple when you need a lot of Smooth Stone Slab pieces quickly. Great for early-game builds or when you’re already crafting other items.

Stonecutter
Best when you want tighter control over output and less over-crafting. Also handy if you’re swapping between multiple stone-based blocks and decorative variants.

Where a Smooth Stone Slab really shines

Once you’ve got your Smooth Stone Slab supply, try using it in places where full blocks feel too tall or heavy. A few popular uses include:

  • Modern-style floors and ceilings with a clean, uniform texture

  • Roof edging and trim to add depth without changing your palette

  • Walkways and patios that look polished compared to Cobblestone

  • Layered landscaping (slabs help create smooth elevation changes)

If you’re building with friends, gathering materials and smelting at scale can be much smoother on a dedicated multiplayer world. A reliable host like Simple Game Hosting makes it easier to keep your Minecraft server responsive while you and your group crank out big builds—especially when multiple players are running furnaces, farms, and large construction projects at the same time.

That’s it—smelt your way to Smooth Stone, then craft or cut your Smooth Stone Slab pieces depending on whether you want speed or precision. Either way, it’s one of the easiest building materials to mass-produce, and it looks great in almost any base style.
